My sister Jennifer and I have tinnitus (ringing in the ears). In addition, I have lost part of my high-frequency hearing. The cause of this may well lie with the KISS concert we attended on 10 December 1996 at AHOY! Rotterdam. Rarely, if ever, have I been subjected to such a wall of noise. All the fans were wearing earplugs. We weren't, and that's why we left early. A performance never to be forgotten, unfortunately.
KISS
KISS is a shock rock/hard rock band considered one of the most successful bands of all time in America. In Europe, KISS is mainly known for the hit I Was Made for Lovin' You. KISS was founded in January 1973 by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. They wanted to make KISS the band 'they had always wanted to see but never got to see', as they called it, 'The Hottest Band in the World'. The band was completed by Ace Frehley and Peter. The group name KISS was chosen by Paul Stanley and derived from a song by The New York Dolls, 'Looking for a kiss'. In the beginning, fans were mainly captivated by the extravagant clothing and performances. Dressed in futuristic costumes with mask-like makeup and surrounded by smoke and fire, KISS wanted to make every concert a spectacle. The music is commercial hard rock, bombastic with lots of melody. From February 1974 to April 1975, the band released three albums and performed almost continuously in America to build a large fan base.
In 1983, KISS decided to remove their masks. Founders Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons thought that unmasking the band would be good for sales. The album Lick it up sold very well and was the first record in four years to go platinum. In 1995, during an acoustic performance for MTV, Peter Criss and Ace Frehley returned to the stage for a successful reunion show. KISS decided to perform again in the original lineup and also with makeup, costumes, and a big show.
In 2019, the band announced the final performance of their tour "End of the Road", which began on 31 January 2019 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada, and is intended as a farewell tour. This was scheduled to take place on 17 July 2021 in New York, the city where the group originated.
