With the song Wonderwall (named after an album by George Harrison - The Beatles), Oasis came onto my radar. This was thanks to my friend Mark van den Berg, who is a big fan of Oasis. I once had the chance to see Liam Gallagher live after Oasis had ceased to exist.
Oasis
Oasis was an English rock band formed in 1991 in Manchester, emerging from an earlier band, The Rain. Oasis originally consisted of Liam Gallagher (vocals and tambourine), Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs (guitar), Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan (bass guitar) and Tony McCarroll (drums and percussion). Later, Liam's older brother Noel Gallagher (lead guitar and vocals) joined as the fifth member. This was the stable line-up until April 1995.
In 1993, Oasis signed with the independent record label Creation Records. In 1994, they released Definitely Maybe, which at the time was the fastest-selling debut album ever. The following year, in 1995, the band released (What's the Story) Morning Glory? with their new drummer Alan White. Together with Suede, Pulp and Blur, they formed the 'big four'.
The Gallagher brothers were frequently in the tabloids during this time due to their wild lifestyle and quarrels. In 1997, Oasis released their third album, Be Here Now. Although it was the fastest-selling album ever with over 8 million copies, Oasis became less popular. Bonehead and Guigsy left Oasis in 1999 during the recording of the fourth album Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, which was released in 2000. After their departure, they were replaced by former Heavy Stereo guitarist Gem Archer and former Hurricane No. 1 guitarist Andy Bell. The recording of the fifth album Heathen Chemistry in 2002 was much more relaxed, as Noel allowed all band members to contribute to the songs. In 2004, Zak Starkey, son of Ringo Starr, replaced Alan White. The subsequent album Don't Believe the Truth, released in 2005, brought success and popularity again.
At the end of the recording of the seventh album Dig Out Your Soul in 2008, Starkey left the band and was replaced by Chris Sharrock. During the tour, the relationship between Noel and Liam deteriorated, leading to Noel leaving the band after a backstage fight in Paris in August 2009. The band, consisting of the remaining members of Oasis and led by Liam Gallagher, decided to continue under the name Beady Eye, while Noel formed his solo project Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds.
On 28 August 2009, during the Dig Out Your Soul tour, Noel Gallagher announced on the official Oasis website after a fight with his brother that he could no longer work with Liam and had decided to leave the band. A month later, his brother Liam announced that the band had officially ended.
At the end of 2009, Liam Gallagher announced that the band members would restart under the original name, without Noel, and that the band had already made some demos. Later, Gallagher announced that the band would continue under a new, then unknown, name. Remarkably, when asked what the new band name would be, Gallagher replied: "not Oasis, that was a shit name anyway". Eventually, the name of that new group became Beady Eye. Beady Eye disbanded in October 2014. Gallagher announced in July 2016 that he would make music again. His album was released on 6 October 2017, titled As You Were.
