The 1980s..... For me, Sade is not only a beautiful woman but also the singer who takes me back in thought to this wonderful and carefree time. Just got my driving licence and the whole world was at my feet. With my yellow VW Beetle from '72, I sped all over the country. I didn't worry about the speed limit because it couldn't reach it anyway. If there's ever a concert, I'd definitely want to go.
Sade
Helen Folesade Adu (Ibadan, Nigeria, 16 January 1959), simply known as Sade, is the singer of the eponymous British band. The core of Sade also includes bassist Paul Spencer Denman, keyboardist Andrew Hale, and guitarist-saxophonist Stuart Matthewman.
Due to her interest in fashion, Sade began a three-year course at London's St. Martins art school in 1977. In the meantime, she sang in the Latin/soul band Arriva, founded by bassist/guitarist Ray St. John. The song Diamond Life (the original title of Smooth Operator) is his work. When Arriva disbanded in 1980, a new band was formed: Pride. Sade, who had meanwhile opened her own boutique and was active as a model, formed the backing vocals with Barbara Dickinson. Nick Moxom was the lead singer.
Pride built a live reputation in both London and New York. The band caught the attention of Spandau Ballet manager Steve Dagger and was about to get a contract in 1982. However, this contract did not go through.
In 1983, Sade signed a solo contract with Portrait (taken over by Epic in 1986), much to the annoyance of Paul Cooke, who was kicked out of the band just before the release of the debut single Your Love Is King (February 1984). Because there was no new drummer, he briefly returned to promote the single. After a BBC session with Blair Cunningham (formerly in the Britfunk band Haircut 100), Paul Cooke was replaced by Dave Early ("He's never early"); percussionist Martin Ditcham and trumpeters Terry Bailey and Gordon Matthewman provided further support during live performances. In July, the album Diamond Life and the second single When Am I Gonna Make A Living were released. However, it was the third single, Smooth Operator, that brought the breakthrough.
After a period of almost 10 years, Sade released the album Soldier of Love in early February 2010. A year later, the tour started with John Legend as the opening act in America.
In 2018, Sade released two new songs.
