There was a time when I couldn't stand hearing Shout anymore. It was such a massive hit and every radio station played it to death. The pop programmes on TV did too. So many years later, it’s fine again, and that applies not only to the single but to the whole album. Tears for Fears is, for me, the sound of the 80s.
On 1 December 2019, the men of Tears for Fears were the holders of the title Sunday Morning Classic with their album "Songs from the Big Chair".
Tears For Fears
Tears for Fears is a British pop duo formed by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. The band was founded in the early 1980s. Originally, Tears for Fears started as a new wave and new romantic group. Graduate was the band Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith were in before founding Tears for Fears. The name of the group is derived from primal therapy devised by Arthur Janov, in which patients are encouraged to scream (Shout, Shout, Let It All Out, after their number 1 hit), cry and hit objects to express their feelings. Hence the name "Tears for Fears". Tears for Fears released their debut album The Hurting in 1983. Many songs on this LP dealt with bad childhood experiences of both boys. In 1985, the second album Songs from the Big Chair appeared. From this album came the successful singles Shout (a number 1 hit in the Netherlands among others), Everybody Wants to Rule the World, Head Over Heels and I Believe.
After the third album, Orzabal and Smith parted ways in a quarrel. Orzabal claimed that Smith had lost the passion for making music, and Smith claimed that Orzabal was completely obsessed with astrology, even bringing astrology books into the studio. Smith released a solo album, which was not successful. In 2004, Tears for Fears reunited. The album Everybody Loves a Happy Ending was released in September 2004. The band went on a world tour in 2004 and 2005. The live album Secret World, released in 2006 in parts of Europe, contains a performance in Paris and three studio tracks (including one by Mayfield) as bonus tracks, as well as an extra DVD with the same performance as the CD.
In 2013 and 2014, Tears for Fears released three covers online: Ready to Start (Arcade Fire), My Girls (Animal Collective) and And I Was a Boy from School (Hot Chip).
