My first introduction to hard rock. Especially the guitar work of Eddie van Halen and the vocals of David Lee Roth touched me in the late '70s. The later singers did a fine job, but for me Van Halen is not complete without the singing and showmanship of David Lee Roth. Watch the videoclip Jump and you'll understand exactly what I mean. My brother-in-law saw them perform in the early '80s and he can still make me jealous with that. There was talk of a reunion for a while, but maybe it's better that it never happens.
Van Halen
Van Halen is an American hard rock band, founded by the originally Dutch brothers Eddie and Alex van Halen. The band is especially known for Eddie's 'two-hand tapping' guitar technique and the flamboyant stage presence of their first singer, David Lee Roth. Roth is seen as the man who blurred the lines between hard rock and show business and broke the standard leather-jackets-with-jeans culture. Among rock musicians, Eddie van Halen is regarded as a highly influential rock guitarist. Virtually every rock guitarist of the 21st century has been directly or indirectly influenced by him. Eddie is also responsible for innovations in guitar amplification, guitar effects, and guitar design, which have been adopted by various manufacturers (including Charvel, Kramer, Ernie Ball, Peavey, Fender) and to which he lent his name (for a fee).
Besides covers, they also played their own songs. After recording a demo with KISS bassist Gene Simmons, they performed in 1977 at the Starwood Hotel where two Warner Bros employees were present. The band got a contract and studio time, and with Simmons' help, they released their first album in 1978. Despite the album's success and further hit singles "Panama" and "Hot for Teacher", there were tensions within the band. Roth was unhappy with Eddie's guest appearance on Michael Jackson's "Beat It" and the other band members increasingly resented Roth's excessive behaviour, both on and off stage. In 1985, David Lee Roth released a solo album (Crazy From the Heat). When he then delayed the recording of the new Van Halen album, he was kicked out of the band. Roth didn't mind, thinking Van Halen was doomed without him. This turned out to be a misjudgement. Roth was succeeded in Van Halen by Sammy Hagar, and the first album with the new lineup (5150) was an unexpected big success in 1986.
On 2 February 2007, the band announced they would tour again with singer David Lee Roth across the United States. New this time was that bassist Michael Anthony, partly responsible for the distinctive backing vocals, was passed over in favour of Eddie's son Wolfgang van Halen on bass guitar. A month later, Eddie announced he was going to a rehab clinic. After that, the tour began, consisting of 34 American concerts, and it was a great success. Since 2008, Michael Anthony has been playing with Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani and Chad Smith in the band Chickenfoot.
Death of Eddie
And then it was suddenly all over. On 6 October 2020, the curtain definitively fell due to the death of Eddie van Halen.
Eddie died in the presence of his wife Janie, son Wolfgang and brother Alex from throat cancer. Van Halen had been ill for some time. His health had deteriorated significantly in recent days. Doctors discovered that the cancer had spread to other organs, including his brain. In recent years, he frequently flew back and forth between the United States and Germany for treatments. His son Wolfgang wrote in an emotional Instagram post that Edward Lodewijk Van Halen was the best father he could have wished for: "I don't think I'll ever get over this loss." Eddie van Halen was one of the most successful Dutch musicians ever. He was born in 1955 in Amsterdam and spent the first years of his childhood in Nijmegen. At the age of 7, he moved with his family to the United States, where in 1972 he founded the hard rock band Mammoth with his brother Alex. That name was later changed to Van Halen. David Lee Roth, from whom they initially rented their sound systems, was brought in as the band's singer.
To the general public, Eddie Van Halen became especially known for hits like Jump, Why can’t this be love and his legendary guitar solo in Michael Jackson's Beat It. The group's lineup changed several times, but Eddie and his brother Alex always remained part of the band.
