After the release of the debut album Fantastic in 1983, Wham! came out with Make it Big in 1984. The album was a huge success worldwide. It reached number one in the British, American and Dutch charts.
The album produced successful singles such as "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go", "Freedom", "Careless Whisper" and "Everything She Wants". "Careless Whisper" is George Michael's debut as a solo artist and was released in August 1984. The song came out while he was still part of Wham!. He wrote the song together with Andrew Ridgeley, the other member of Wham!. Because the song did not fit the style of Wham!, it was released as a solo project by George Michael. George Michael wanted to make somewhat more mature music. For that reason, the group announced their split in the spring of 1986. On 28 June 1986, the group gave a grand farewell concert for 72,000 people at Wembley Stadium. The farewell single was The Edge of Heaven, again a number 1 hit in many countries (source: Wikipedia).
There were rumours that Wham! would reunite once more. Unfortunately, this has not been possible due to the death of George Michael in 2016.
On 16 February 2020, the album "Make it Big" was on our turntable during Sunday Morning Classics.
