U2 event
U2 was founded on 25 September 1976 at Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin. The band started under the name Feedback, after Larry Mullen Jr. had put up a notice on the school canteen’s bulletin board looking for musicians who wanted to form a band. Bono signed up, claiming he could sing and play guitar, something he later admitted wasn’t entirely true at the time. The Edge also joined, as did Adam Clayton, who, according to the band members, was invited partly because of his striking appearance. As was later said: “He looked so cool; if he joined the band, we’d surely become popular.” The original line-up consisted of five members. Besides Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr., Dik Evans, The Edge’s brother, was also part of the group as a guitarist. Early in 1978, the band changed its name to The Hype. Shortly afterwards, Dik Evans left the band and, on the advice of Irish singer and advertising man Steve Averill, the name U2 was chosen, a name that does not specifically refer to one meaning. On 14 October 1980, U2 performed for the first time in the Netherlands, at the KRO studios in Hilversum. The next day they played at the Melkweg in Amsterdam, followed by a show on 16 October at Vera in Groningen. The first Dutch tour was concluded on 17 October at Gigant in Apeldoorn. During the now legendary The Joshua Tree Tour, U2 gave two memorable concerts at De Kuip in Rotterdam. These historic performances took place on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 July 1987 and are considered by many fans to be highlights of the band’s career. On 10 July 2027, it will be exactly forty years since the first of these special concerts took place. To celebrate this anniversary, we are hosting a special U2 Event at De Platenbar. A day full of music, memories and stories about one of the greatest bands in rock history. This special day includes a small U2 pop quiz for true connoisseurs and fans, playing the finest U2 records on vinyl, and a two-hour programme of legendary live recordings in our filmhouse. Among others, we will show Under a Red Blood Sky, the iconic concert film that put U2 on the global map, and the legendary performance at Live Aid in 1985, still regarded as one of the most impressive festival performances in pop history. Whether you’ve been a fan from the very start or discovered U2 later on: this will be an afternoon full of nostalgia, music and special memories of forty years of U2 at De Kuip.
