A Russian Night – Claudio Abbado, Hélène Grimaud & the Lucerne Festival Orchestra Some concerts stay with you because of their programme. And some become legendary because of the musicians performing them. A Russian Night undoubtedly belongs to the latter category. During the Lucerne Festival 2008, these three iconic Russian masterpieces were performed together by the Lucerne Festival Orchestra under the direction of the unforgettable Claudio Abbado, with Hélène Grimaud as soloist in Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto. It was also Grimaud’s first concert recording with Abbado. The programme Sergei Rachmaninov – Piano Concerto No. 2 One of the most beloved piano concertos ever written. Hélène Grimaud plays with natural musicality and an almost chamber music-like refinement. Her lyrical approach fits seamlessly with Abbado’s transparent orchestral sound, allowing the famous melodies plenty of room to breathe. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – The Tempest Inspired by Shakespeare’s play, Tchaikovsky paints the storm, the love and the dramatic events on the island in a colourful symphonic fantasy. Abbado lets the orchestra shine in a performance full of tension, poetry and impressive orchestral colours. Igor Stravinsky – The Firebird (suite) After the lyricism of Rachmaninov and the drama of Tchaikovsky, the evening concludes with Stravinsky’s spectacular Firebird. Mystery, magic, fiery rhythms and an overwhelming finale make this performance a true orchestral celebration. The Lucerne Festival Orchestra shows here why it was considered one of the best festival orchestras in the world under Abbado.
