Soft Leaves

What begins as an adventurous camping holiday through the German forests turns into a search for stability due to an unexpected event. Soft Leaves is a subtle and poignant film about loss, change, and the difficult path to acceptance. At the centre is eleven-year-old Yuna (Lill Berteloot), who starts the holiday with her father Julien (Geert Van Rampelberg) and brother Kai. When her father ends up in hospital after an accident, her world suddenly comes to a halt. Her mother Aika (Masako Tomita), whom Yuna hasn’t seen for years, returns from Japan to care for her. This means Yuna is confronted not only with the uncertainty surrounding her father but also with a mother who has become almost a stranger to her. Director Miwako Van Weyenberg deliberately tells the story at a calm pace. The silence, the small observations and the space between events make it palpable how Yuna tries to understand what is happening in her life. Her grief begins with the disappointment of a holiday cut short but grows into the realisation that her whole future could look very different. Lill Berteloot carries the film with an impressive, understated performance. Her confusion, sorrow and quiet defiance are never overdone, which makes them all the more powerful. Soft Leaves shows how fragile life is and how a seemingly small moment can change everything.
