World Orchestra for Peace – Abu Dhabi Festival The concert took place on 4 January 2011 at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, during the Abu Dhabi Festival. It was the World Orchestra for Peace’s first performance in the Arab world. The orchestra was founded in 1995 by Sir Georg Solti. It is not a permanent orchestra: for special occasions, top musicians from major orchestras around the world are brought together. For this concert, musicians from 63 orchestras in 31 countries came together. The idea behind the orchestra is as interesting as the music itself: using music as a universal language for peace and connection between countries. UNESCO awarded the orchestra the title UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2010. The programme Rossini – Overture Guillaume Tell A spectacular opening with plenty of brass, percussion, and a famous finale. It’s an ideal piece to immediately showcase such a large international orchestra. Prokofiev – Symphony No. 1 “Classical” Here Gergiev reveals a completely different side. The symphony is light, elegant, witty, and at times almost Haydnesque. The BBC Music Magazine review particularly praises the sparkling finale. Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 5 This is the emotional centrepiece of the evening. Where Prokofiev is playful and light, Gergiev chooses grand romantic gestures, drama, and a huge orchestral sound for Tchaikovsky. One reviewer described Gergiev’s performance as an interpretation in which he pours his entire musical energy into this symphony. And as an encore, Johann Strauss II – Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka.
